What is an Environmental Management System?

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is essentially a formalised set of policies, processes and procedures that sets out how an organisation can reduce its environmental impact. An EMS provides a framework by which an organisation can create, control, manage and improve its environmental performance.

What are the benefits of an Environmental Management System?

Increasingly, organisations are recognising that environmental performance is not merely a matter of compliance but also an important factor for customers and other related stakeholders. Implementing an EMS system clearly demonstrates that an organisation is committed to reducing its environmental impact. Some of the benefits to be gained from implementing an EMS include:

  • Risk reduction
  • Enhanced brand image
  • Improves credibility
  • Enhances customer and stakeholder relations
  • Cost savings through increased efficiencies and reductions in wastage
  • Increased competitive advantage against others in your sector
  • Greater usage of resources
  • Continuous process improvement
  • Enhanced employee engagement and retention
  • Increased reputational capital
  • Develop long-term sustainability
  • Increases in sales
  • Knowing your organisation is caring for our environment!

What is ISO14001?

ISO14001 is a published, internationally recognised environmental management standard that provides a comprehensive framework that an organisation can use in order to create its own bespoke EMS.  The standard is available from the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) https://www.iso.org/iso-14001-environmental-management.html

Many organisations seek validation of their QMS system by achieving ISO14001 certification.

Once you are satisfied that your organisation is working efficiently within the guidelines set by the standard, your organisation may seek to achieve ISO14001 certification – although please note this is not a requirement of using the standard. In order to achieve certification, an approved, impartial auditing body makes an assessment of your EMS, comparing it against the standard. If your EMS is deemed to meet the requirements set out in the standard, then certification is provided.

Certification for ISO14001 is suitable for all types and sizes of organisation – private, not-for-profit or governmental. Certification not only provides assurance to your customers, suppliers and other stakeholders but also demonstrates that your organisation is meetings its regulatory and contractual requirements. Certification can also provide your organisation with a powerful marketing tool, improve brand image and credibility and provide increased competitive advantage.
